GHK-Cu

GHK-Cu is best characterized not as a classical receptor agonist but as a high-affinity copper(II) carrier, and its activity is understood to be closely tied to delivering copper to copper-dependent enzymes such as lysyl oxidase and superoxide dismutase. The GHK tripeptide is also understood to bind extracellular matrix components and to interact at fibroblast surfaces in ways that modulate cell behavior. Its effects therefore appear to be mediated more by metal-ion delivery and matrix signaling than by a single dedicated membrane receptor.

GHK-Cu is understood to influence dermal fibroblasts by supporting the expression of structural matrix proteins, including collagen, elastin, and proteoglycans. Downstream, it is associated with modulation of TGF-beta-related signaling and with shifting the balance between matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs), which is relevant to how tissue is remodeled. It has additionally been linked to broad changes across pathways involved in antioxidant defense and tissue repair.

Limited direct neural activity is described for GHK-Cu, which is understood primarily as a skin- and matrix-active copper peptide rather than a neuroactive compound. The GHK motif is associated with neurotrophic and tissue-protective gene-expression patterns, but this is preliminary and not a primary or established use. It should not be regarded as a CNS-targeting peptide.

GHK-Cu is understood to modulate inflammatory and antioxidant signaling, in part through copper delivery to enzymes that help manage oxidative balance. It is also understood to relate to angiogenesis and to the orderly remodeling of the extracellular matrix, both of which are relevant to tissue maintenance. These systemic and regulatory associations remain informational rather than defined clinical effects.
